Before opening the Cavenders Western Wear store, the founder of the western wear store Mr. James R. Cavender had founded a Dairy Mart by the name of Cavender's Dairy Mart in Pittsburg in Texas in as early as 1957. Soon after that he decided to start a new business featuring the latest trendy clothing. Eventually the Cavenders Western Wear store was established in the year 1965 and it became so widely popular that the store was established in more than 6 states with more than over 50 stores all over. Ever since then the company has been expanding and in the year 2003 company acquired the retails company by the name of Boots and Spurs which had stores located in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Springdale, Arkansas and tried to convert these stores into Cavenders Western Wear stores and the conversions are still under operation. There has been constant growth of the company over the years and has still not slowed down even in the late 2000s. The company still continues to open Cavenders Western Wear stores in several new locations and is expanding the stores in the older locations. In Plano, Texas the Cavenders Western Wear store was not only expanded to double the square feet but it was also open for operation throughout the time period of such expansion. It was reopened in the year 2008 and since this grand reopening; the Cavenders Western Wear store has become one of highest volume stores in the United States.
